A Wholesome Transition with Rachel Flatt RN, BSN, IBCLC

What a transition birth can be for every one involved. We are asked to let go of our “normal” life experience and enter into a new phase with an extra human in our arms. When it comes to feeding your baby, my hope is you feel empowered knowing you are nourishing them. Here are some things my birth clients have implemented that help them have a more wholesome transition with feeding their infant, getting sleep, and maintaining milk supply.

·  Before or during pregnancy, call in your support team that will be there throughout the pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum time. These individuals may include: a partner, doula, lactation consultant, chiropractor, acupuncturist, sleep consultant, and/or friends and family. Sometimes we just need to surround ourselves with other humans that can hold space for us. If you are unable to have this support in person, search the web and social media for tele-support. Call in the individuals who support you and your goals and graciously let go of all those who do not have your best interests in mind. 

· Whether you deliver in a hospital, birth center, or at home, skin-to-skin with your infant can be a time to connect with your newborn, and help them feel safe and loved. Skin-to-skin can also promote breastfeeding as your baby is nuzzled on your chest and can easily crawl to the breast for a feeding. This is a great way to soothe a fussy infant prior to feeding as well. 

· Allow your infant to feed on demand, making sure they feed 8 or more times in 24 hours, and keeping track of wet and dirty diapers. This will help maintain your milk supply and determine whether your baby is getting enough calories throughout the day. 

· Staying hydrated and eating warm, soft foods the first couple of days postpartum helps nourish your body as it heals after birth. Hydration and nutrient dense foods also help support a healthy milk supply as your body is being replenished with essential vitamins, minerals and proteins. 

· One way to help support rest after delivery is to have your support team prepare your meals and offer assistance in creating an environment that supports rest and healing. May we slow down and practice asking for help, so that we may connect with our newborn and reconnect with ourselves as we transition into a new season of life.
